During a cold winter night, a cyclist is hit by a SUV and then abandoned to agonize in the frozen snow. The mysterious episode, on which the police will investigate, connects the events of the members of two families: the petty-bourgeois family of Ossola and the one rich and venerated of Bernaschi. Through a sophisticated narration divided into four chapters, freely adapted by American noir novel, the film explores human and inhuman ambitions, generational conflicts and social splendor and misery of North Italy province, ending with a mocking flavor epilogue that does not seem to fulfill anybody.

Contemporary Rome. At first glance Vincent, a Frenchman in his fifties that has kept only the accent, and Maria, about fifteen years younger, seem similar to many other couples. When they take the subway, they sit close together, arms around each other. When they return home, they make love passionately, intertwined by a mutual attraction that usually is common to the beginning of a love story, not an established relationship like theirs. In the everyday life mainly lived in the shelter of the walls of the house, even the presence of outsiders seems not only unnecessary, but even avoided, as if both were enough to each other and the rest of the world did not matter or existed. Yet, at a closer look, it’s hard not to notice small signs of uneasiness that come from the female half of this apparently so united couple. Maria is too vulnerable and too in love to assert her malaise. And her attempts of rebellion, rather than indicating a genuine willingness to move away from her partner, resemble almost a desperate request for help addressed to her “Vincenzo” and promptly ignored by him. What Vincent does not seem to realise is that Maria is not questioning their relationship, but the life-project they have so far brought forward together: a scary secret project that Maria has no intention to keep living.
